A Peoples Democratic Party aspirant for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Chief Toyin Amuzu, has urged Nigerians to take the 2027 general elections more seriously, warning that the country may continue to struggle to reap the full benefits of democracy if citizens fail to elect credible leaders.
Amuzu, who is seeking a seat in the House of Representatives, gave the charge during a recent engagement in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he stressed the need for informed and responsible voting.
The politician, popularly known as TA, expressed concern over Nigeria’s slow pace of development, lamenting that the country lags behind its global counterparts in infrastructure and governance.
He said his experiences abroad often leave him disillusioned when compared with the state of development at home.
“I feel ashamed when I travel out and see the level of development in other countries. Nigerians may not truly enjoy democracy until people begin to take voting the right individuals as a personal and collective responsibility,” he said.
Amuzu maintained that sustainable development could only be achieved when citizens deliberately elect leaders with integrity, competence and a clear vision, adding that nation-building requires a collective effort between the electorate and those in power.
According to him, developed countries have made progress due to visionary leadership and strong institutions, noting that Nigeria’s transformation must equally be driven by the choices of its citizens.
“Let us work together to build a formidable society; I will not disappoint you,” he added.
The aspirant also blamed voters for contributing to poor governance through what he described as misguided electoral choices influenced by religion, ethnicity and financial inducement.
“We blame the government, but followers are also guilty. Too often, we allow religion, political affiliation and sentiments to determine our choices instead of putting the right peg in the right hole. In the 2027 elections, we must shun politics of rice and money,” he said.
He further decried what he described as a recurring trend in which “the worst of us have ruled the best,” attributing it to a lack of patriotism and accountability among some leaders.
Amuzu questioned why Nigerians continue to support leaders who fail to deliver on their mandates, despite having the constitutional power to vote them out.
“Why do we support our oppressors and continue to suffer, when we have the power to vote them out?” he queried.
The PDP chieftain also criticised the persistent lack of basic amenities, including electricity, potable water and good roads, describing them as fundamental responsibilities of government rather than tools for political patronage.
Looking ahead to the 2027 polls, he called on eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and actively participate in the electoral process.
“Things cannot change if we sit down and complain. This is the time to act. Let us seize the opportunity, get our voter cards and vote massively for the right candidates,” he said.
