The Delta State Police Command has admitted it has no clear explanation for the controversial killing of a suspect by one of its officers, describing the incident as both troubling and difficult to comprehend.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, made this known on Wednesday during a live appearance on Channels Television while reacting to the viral video showing a suspect being shot at close range by a police officer.
The incident, widely condemned as an extrajudicial killing, reportedly occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.
The victim, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, was said to have been arrested while attempting to waybill a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
Police authorities had explained that operatives were deployed to apprehend the suspect following intelligence from members of the public.
However, the situation escalated when the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, allegedly opened fire on the suspect.
According to the command, the officer’s action contravened Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking on the development, Edafe expressed shock over the conduct of the officer, noting that the command was still struggling to understand what could have prompted the fatal action.
He said, “In my six years in public relations, this is the most difficult moment for me. Having an incident that cannot be explained is very challenging.
“There is no explanation for this. That policeman—honestly, I don’t understand what went wrong with him. While the police cannot officially attribute such actions to spirituality, it may not be far from it, because that is the only way one might attempt to explain what happened.”
The police spokesperson’s remarks have further stirred public debate, with many Nigerians questioning accountability within the Force and the recurring cases of extrajudicial killings.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command confirmed that the officer involved has been arrested and transferred to Abuja for further investigation and disciplinary procedures.
The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its zero tolerance for unlawful killings, assuring the public that due process would be followed and justice served in the matter.
The incident has continued to generate widespread outrage across social media, with civil society organisations and legal practitioners calling for transparent prosecution and systemic reforms within the police.
