A 32-year-old housewife has been arrested by the Kano State Police Command for allegedly setting her co-wife’s room on fire in a midnight attack that left four members of a family with severe burns in Mangwarori Quarters, Mariri area of Kano State.
The incident, which occurred at about 12:40 a.m. on May 12, 2026, reportedly affected her co-wife, two children, and her husband, according to the police.
Confirming the development in a statement on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, said the suspect, identified as Maryam Usman, allegedly set fire to the room occupied by her co-wife, Firdausi Saminu, aged 40.
He said the inferno left four persons with varying degrees of burns. The victims include Firdausi Saminu (40), her two children, Isma’il Saminu (3) and Khadija Saminu (5), as well as their father, Saminu Miko.
According to the statement, the victims were swiftly evacuated to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Kano, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The police said operatives from Mariri Division responded promptly to distress calls and arrested the suspect at the scene. Exhibits linked to the incident were also recovered.
The command added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bompai, for discreet investigation, with a view to prosecuting the suspect for offences bordering on mischief by fire and attempted culpable homicide.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, condemned the incident, describing it as “criminal, inhuman and unacceptable,” and directed a speedy and professional investigation to ensure justice.
He also assured that the command would provide necessary protection and support to the victims throughout the investigation and prosecution process.
