President Bola Tinubu has appointed a 39-year-old professor of Computer Engineering, Segun Aina, as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
Aina will succeed the outgoing registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, whose tenure is scheduled to end on July 31, 2026.
The appointment was disclosed on Thursday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the Presidency, Aina, a professor at Obafemi Awolowo University, brings extensive expertise in digital infrastructure, examination systems, and institutional reforms—areas considered critical to the ongoing modernisation of Nigeria’s education sector.
The statement described him as one of the youngest professors in his field and noted that he would emerge as the youngest registrar in the history of JAMB upon assumption of office.
It added that Aina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, as well as a Master’s and PhD from Loughborough University, with specialisations in Internet Computing, Network Security, and Digital Signal Processing. He also attended the Senior Management Programme at the Lagos Business School.
With over 15 years of professional experience, Aina has reportedly advised federal and state governments on digital transition, system design, and institutional reforms. He has also consulted for key examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board, particularly on ICT systems and examination integrity.
The Presidency further highlighted his membership of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and international organisations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
President Tinubu, according to the statement, expressed confidence in Aina’s capacity to consolidate on the reforms introduced under Oloyede, particularly in enhancing transparency and efficiency in the conduct of public examinations.
The President said the new registrar is expected to leverage his technical expertise and policy experience to reposition the board and deepen ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions process.
Aina’s appointment comes at a time when stakeholders have continued to call for stronger digital safeguards and credibility in examination systems, amid growing concerns over malpractice and systemic inefficiencies.
