Several players of Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, have alleged that a total of $1,220 was stolen from their hotel rooms while they were camped in Casablanca, Morocco, ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final.
The players reportedly discovered the missing cash after returning to their rooms at the Marriott Hotel, where the team is lodged for the tournament.
Among those affected, forward Esther Okoronkwo allegedly lost $700, the highest amount reported, while team captain Rasheedat Ajibade was said to have lost $200.
Veteran defender Osinachi Ohale reportedly claimed $100 was stolen from her room. Midfielder Halimatu Ayinde also allegedly lost $100, while teammate Joy Omewa reported a loss of $120.
The combined amount allegedly stolen from the affected players stands at $1,220.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor the management of the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca had issued an official statement on the alleged incident.
It also remained unclear whether the matter had been reported to Moroccan security authorities or if an investigation had commenced.
The alleged theft has raised concerns over the welfare and security of the Nigerian players as they continue their campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Falcons have reached the final in pursuit of another continental title.
The development comes as the nine-time African champions prepare for one of the biggest matches of the tournament, with attention now divided between their quest for the title and the reported security breach at their team hotel.
