The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting National Youth Service Corps members and other residents of the state, while warning corps members against engaging in criminal activities.
Ojajuni gave the assurance on Monday when he received the Ogun State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Mrs Adewuyi Omolabake Frances, and members of her management team on a courtesy visit to the State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The visit, according to the police, was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the NYSC to enhance the security of corps members and promote community-based policing across Ogun State.
Speaking during the visit, the NYSC coordinator commended the police command for its continued support and protection of corps members serving in the state.
She particularly praised the command for ensuring the safety of corps members across the 20 local government areas and for creating a conducive environment for them to serve.
Frances also pledged the scheme’s continued cooperation with the police, especially in the area of intelligence sharing and efforts to sustain peace and security in the state.
Responding, Ojajuni said safeguarding lives and property remained the constitutional responsibility of the police and assured that the command would continue to prioritise the safety of corps members and all residents.
Drawing from his personal experience as a former corps member, the police commissioner urged serving corps members to make productive use of the opportunities offered by the NYSC scheme.
He advised them to develop leadership qualities, embrace discipline and avoid any form of criminality or association with unlawful groups.
“The NYSC uniform does not confer immunity from criminal liability. Anyone found culpable of any offence will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.
Ojajuni also introduced the corps members to the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, an initiative aimed at preventing youth involvement in cultism, substance abuse and other social vices through advocacy and community engagement.
He disclosed that the command would soon launch a statewide campaign to expand the initiative across educational institutions and communities in Ogun.
The commissioner further urged the NYSC management to maintain strict discipline among corps members to promote responsible citizenship.
Ojajuni also recalled the recent rescue of 18 corps members whose vehicle broke down along the Ogbere-Ijebu Ode road at night.
He said the police swiftly responded to the distress call and safely evacuated the stranded corps members to Ijebu Ode, describing the operation as a demonstration of the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of every resident in Ogun State.
He reiterated that the Ogun State Police Command would continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to strengthen security and guarantee a safe environment for corps members throughout their service year.
