The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the August 15 Osun State governorship election, Bola Oyebamiji, has alleged fresh attacks on members of the party, urging Governor Ademola Adeleke to call his supporters to order.
Oyebamiji made the allegation on Friday after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, where he said the President counselled him and other stakeholders to prioritise peace following the outcome of the election.
The APC candidate, who lost the poll to Adeleke, said the interest of the people should remain the priority of all political actors, regardless of party affiliation or electoral outcome.
Oyebamiji said, “I met with our father, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and what Baba said was that the most important thing is to run every election with a peaceful mind.
“It is important for us that we Nigerians have to know that government is about people. And because it’s about people, it is important that we need to be peaceful.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, winner of the election with 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes.
Adeleke won by a margin of 66,252 votes, taking 19 of the state’s 30 Local Government Areas, while Oyebamiji won 11 LGAs.
However, Oyebamiji said the APC had yet to take a final position on the election, noting that the party was still examining the results and other relevant documents.
“For now, the APC is still examining the books, and by the time we spread our sheet, we’ll be able to get back to the public on what our own opinion is and what decisions we want to take,” he said.
He appealed to APC members and other residents of Osun to remain calm while the party concludes its assessment of the election.
Oyebamiji also called on Adeleke to intervene over what he described as fresh attacks allegedly targeting APC members after the election.
“I want to advise the governor too that it’s important for him to talk to his people. Violence is against our people.
“It’s not too good, and he needs to talk to them so that each and every one of us can be on the same page,” he said.
The APC candidate alleged that about four or five people were attacked in his hometown, Ikire, on Friday morning.
“Well, yes, even as at this morning in my own village, Ikire, some were attacked. About four or five people were attacked. We have informed the security operatives accordingly,” he said.
The allegation comes amid calls by political stakeholders for restraint and peaceful resolution of disputes arising from the August 15 election.
