The United States has delivered military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism and other security threats.
The US Africa Command disclosed this on Thursday, saying a US Air Force C-17 transport aircraft delivered the equipment to Nigeria over the weekend.
AFRICOM said the consignment was supplied under a Foreign Military Sales agreement between the United States and Nigerian governments.
According to the command, the delivery forms part of the expanding security partnership between Washington and Abuja and is intended to bolster Nigeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
“The equipment is part of a foreign military sales agreement that furthers the US-Nigerian partnership and will aid in Nigeria’s efforts to counter terrorism in the region,” AFRICOM said in a statement shared on X.
The development comes amid sustained military operations by Nigerian security forces against terrorist organisations and other armed groups operating in different parts of the country.
Nigeria has continued to face serious security challenges, particularly terrorism and insurgency in the North-East and banditry and other forms of armed violence in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions.
The latest US military support underscores the continued security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in the areas of counter-terrorism and strengthening the operational capacity of Nigerian security forces.
The US delivery is expected to support the Nigerian military’s efforts to improve its response to terrorist threats and other security challenges confronting the country.
