The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 57-year-old man, identified as Kadiri Edenokun, over the alleged defilement of his six-year-old stepdaughter in Jattu, Auchi, Edo North.
The arrest, according to the command, followed allegations that the suspect sexually abused the child on multiple occasions.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation to committing the offence repeatedly.
The police said the child is currently receiving medical treatment under the care of the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs, while investigators continue to gather evidence in the case.
Ikoedem said, “The command has arrested a suspect over the alleged defilement of his six-year-old stepdaughter. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to committing the offence multiple times.”
She added that the suspect remained in police custody and would be charged before a court after the conclusion of the investigation.
The development has again drawn attention to the vulnerability of children to sexual abuse, particularly within environments where perpetrators may have close access to them.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, warned that the command would not tolerate sexual violence, particularly offences committed against children.
Daaor urged parents, guardians and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious behaviour or suspected abuse involving children.
He further warned that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The command appealed to residents to provide timely and credible information about suspicious persons, movements or activities that could assist the police in preventing crimes and protecting vulnerable persons.
Meanwhile, the Edo Police Command disclosed that its operatives had recovered the second and remaining Toyota Highlander allegedly stolen during a robbery at the residence of the Edo State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Hon. Kennedy Odion, in Benin City.
The robbery reportedly occurred on September 6, 2026, at Odion’s residence off Winners Road, Ihie Community, Benin City.
According to the police, credible intelligence enabled operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit to track and recover the black Toyota Highlander, bearing registration number LSR 729 HY, along 3rd Cemetery Street, off New Lagos Road, New Benin.
The PPRO said the command remained on the trail of those responsible for the robbery, adding that efforts were ongoing to recover other stolen property and arrest all the suspects involved.
