The Jigawa State Hisbah Corps has arrested eight men over alleged involvement in same-sex acts following a complaint by a resident of Kazaure who claimed that the encounters had adversely affected his life.
The complainant, identified as a resident of the Kanti area of Kazaure town, reportedly alleged that nine individuals had engaged in same-sex acts with him on different occasions.
According to a statement issued by the Hisbah Public Relations Officer, Dauda Muhammad Hadejia, the complainant told the authorities that he subsequently tested positive for HIV and attributed the infection to the alleged encounters.
Following the complaint, the Hisbah Corps reportedly commenced an investigation and launched a search for the nine individuals named by the complainant.
Eight of the suspects were subsequently arrested and taken into custody, while efforts were reportedly continuing in connection with the remaining person named in the complaint.
The complainant was said to have appealed to the authorities to intervene and seek justice over what he described as actions that had negatively affected his life.
Commenting on the development, the Deputy Commander-General of the Jigawa State Hisbah Corps, Dr Hussain Yusuf Baban, urged parents to pay greater attention to the upbringing of their children and monitor the people with whom they associate.
Baban also appealed to members of the public to remain conscious of their actions and conduct themselves in accordance with Islamic teachings and applicable laws.
The latest development comes amid enforcement activities by Hisbah authorities in parts of Northern Nigeria over conduct regarded by the authorities as contrary to Islamic teachings and relevant state laws.
The arrest also echoes previous cases involving allegations of same-sex conduct in Jigawa.
In 2020, Hisbah officials reportedly arrested two men in Dutse following a dispute over alleged payment connected with a same-sex encounter. The suspects were subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The circumstances surrounding the latest case, including the specific allegations against each of the eight suspects, remain subject to investigation.
No conviction has been reported in the latest case, and the suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
