At least five miners have been killed and two others injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident, which occurred around 1pm on Saturday, came amid heightened tension and a wave of attacks reported in parts of the state.
The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack, describing the killings as another painful loss for the community.
He said five people were killed while two others sustained injuries during the assault.
Tengwong condemned the attack and called on security agencies to urgently strengthen the protection of residents and prevent further bloodshed.
A community member, Simon Mundat, also confirmed the casualties, saying the incident had left residents devastated.
He appealed to the authorities to improve security around the community to enable residents to carry out their legitimate activities without fear.
As of press time, the spokespersons for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Polycarp Oteh, and the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alabo Alfred, had not responded to enquiries on the attack.
The latest incident occurred despite measures announced by the Plateau State Government to contain the worsening security situation.
The government had on Monday imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi, following a series of attacks and killings.
On Friday, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, condemned the incessant attacks in the affected communities and urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
Meanwhile, security operatives working with local hunters reportedly repelled an attack by suspected terrorists on Latok community in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area of the state.
A resident, Danat Noel, said the security personnel, supported by local hunters, responded swiftly after the attackers arrived in the community.
According to him, the operatives engaged the assailants, forcing them to retreat from the area.
