The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has assured the public that the implicated Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ is not registered for sale in Nigeria.
In response to recent recalls in Malaysia and Taiwan due to the alleged presence of the carcinogenic compound ethylene oxide, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, stated that swift actions were being taken to investigate the presence of ethylene oxide in Indomie noodles and other brands of instant noodles offered for sale to Nigerians.
Prof. Adeyeye gave this assurance on Tuesday in a statement released on its official website.
She emphasized that NAFDAC-approved instant noodle products in Nigeria are manufactured locally and subject to a strict regulatory regime covering all aspects of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
She also noted that the Ports Inspection Directorate (PID) is on high alert to prevent the importation of the implicated product into Nigeria.
“We use this medium to assure the public that a thorough investigation of the products will be conducted both at the factory and market levels and our findings will be communicated.
“NAFDAC wishes to reassure the public that the Agency is proactive and remains alive to her responsibilities of safeguarding the health of the public,” said Prof. Adeyeye.
Recall that health authorities in Malaysia and Taiwan reported finding ethylene oxide, a compound that is used to sterilize medical devices and spices and is associated with causing cancer, in Indomie’s “special chicken” flavor instant noodles.
In Malaysia, out of 36 samples of instant noodles from different brands tested since 2022, 11 samples were found to contain ethylene oxide.
The ministrHealthealth has taken enforcement actions and recalled the affected products, but it is unclear if other brands were involved.
Similarly, in Taipei, Taiwan, departmental health reported detecting ethylene oxide in two types of instant noodles, including the Indomie chicken flavor, during random inspections, which violated standards.
