Police Bust Extortion Ring Involving Law Enforcement Officers, Thugs

In a major crackdown on corruption and illegal activities, the Lagos State Police Command apprehended a group of law enforcement officers and criminals involved in extortion.

The joint operation, conducted between Friday and Saturday, targeted individuals engaging in illicit activities around the Mile 2 area of Lagos.

Among those arrested were three officers from the Lagos State Police Command, along with personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Shockingly, these public servants were found to be collaborating with a gang of 14 thugs, further exacerbating the issue of corruption within law enforcement.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the successful operation and subsequent arrests.

He revealed that the operation was spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Lagos State, Fatai Tijani.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, took decisive action by establishing a taskforce to address the rampant reports of motorists falling victim to extortion schemes orchestrated by both rogue officers and criminal elements. Owohunwa emphasized a zero-tolerance policy, asserting that any law enforcement personnel implicated in extortion activities would face the full force of the law.

“The CP promises motorists that the enforcement team would sustain the raids and replicate same in other parts of the state until total sanity is restored,” Hundeyin reassured, highlighting the commitment to restoring public trust and safety on the roads.

This bold move by the Lagos State Police Command serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing efforts to root out corruption and hold those responsible accountable.

As the investigations unfold, authorities are determined to ensure that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in upholding the law and safeguarding the rights of citizens.
