The Governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum, has disbursed essential food and palliative supplies to 2,000 households in Feezan ward of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, MMC.

The distribution event, held at the Mohammed Goni College of Legal and Islamic Studies, occurred on Wednesday as part of an ongoing effort to mitigate the hardships faced by the residents due to economic pressures.

According to the governor, this is in a bid to alleviate the challenges caused by the withdrawal of fuel subsidy and the subsequent rise in the cost of living in the state.

Having initiated the palliative distribution project in July, Governor Zulum’s objective is to extend assistance to over 300,000 households, encompassing approximately 1.8 million individuals.

These households, which consist of about six members each in need of support during these trying times.

Under this progressive initiative, every qualifying resident of Feezan ward was issued a palliative voucher.

This voucher granted them access to essential food items, helping to alleviate the strain brought about by the escalating costs of basic commodities.

The most recent distribution event in Feezan saw the provision of aid to 2,000 households, equally divided between 1,000 male-headed households and 1,000 female-headed households.

Each of these households was presented with a bag of rice and a bag of beans, aiming to bring some relief to their daily lives.

To ensure the utmost transparency and accountability in the process of selecting beneficiaries, the Borno State Government actively engaged civil society organizations to participate in the oversight of the palliative distribution committee.

During the distribution ceremony, Governor Zulum, who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Hon. Sugun Mai Mele, highlighted that a total of 15 wards within the Maiduguri Metropolis will benefit from this initiative.

He further said that each ward will receive 2,000 bags of rice and 2,000 bags of beans, signifying a collective effort to stand by the side of those in need during these challenging times.
