The Chairman, Mobile Phones Dealers and Technicians Association at the Computer village,Abeokuta, Ogun State, Ifebola Togunwa, has raised the alarm over the planned take over of the land by the people he described as land grabbers.

Togunwa said this on Wednesday, while speaking with PLATFORM TIMES at the computer village on the challenges facing the phone dealers and repairers working in the Computer village in Abeokuta.

The Chairman of MOPDATEC commended the former Governor of the State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the incumbent Governor, Dapo Abiodun for their efforts in saving their Tarmac, saying, if not because of the intervention of the government, the Tarmac would have been handed over to land grabbers.

Speaking on the challenges facing them on the land, Togunwa said the matter has been taken to court, asking the government to wade into the matter so as not to lose the place.

“We want the governor to support the case by not allowing the land grabbers to have access to the land, if not, where will the thousands of the people go if those people later take possession of the land. As I’m speaking, the case is still in court.

Speaking on the risk involved in buying phones in unverified places, Togunwa warned that the action poses risk which could lead to jail.

He urged the customers to look for accredited phones dealers to buy phones, saying, every base has its membership number which can be recognized as the members of Mobile Phones Dealers and Technicians Association (MOPDATEC) in order to curb the dubious act from people who are not members of the association.

On the effects of subsidy removal, Togunwa lamented that the situation affects the phone dealers and repairers .

He said “most of us who are using cars had to drop our cars due to hike in fuel whenever we’re coming to workplace. Most of our customers do not care about buying a new phone anymore, they prefer to repair the old ones.

Togunwa pleaded with the government, to organize empowerment programmes for the youths on skills which everyone is good at.

“We, the youths are the ones who empowered ourselves, and the majority of us went to school but we became marketers who are buying and selling phones in Tarmac due to the unemployment rate in Nigeria”
