A significant breakthrough was achieved by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday as it successfully dismantled a syndicate of suspected internet fraudsters in Enugu.
The Enugu Zonal Command of the commission carried out a meticulously executed operation resulting in the apprehension of 28 individuals allegedly involved in internet-related fraudulent activities.
According to the spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, the operation was a commendable feat accomplished by the diligent operatives of the Enugu Zonal Command.
These suspects were apprehended on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, during a strategic sting operation that targeted their illicit activities.
The suspects, whose identities were released by Uwujaren, include Godwin Ogbonna, Bright Chidozie, Chukwuebuka Ugwu, Ifesi Isaac, Collins Nnachi, Michael Nnamdi, Ikechukwu Derrick Anya, Nneji Onyebuchi, Nwali Chukwujekwu Chukwudi, Kenechukwu Barry, Ibe Chisom, and Godwin Okwuchi Promise. The list continues with Chijioke Eze Henry, Chinwetalu Eze Harrison, Somadina James, Ejike Ezeoha, Seth Onodika, Akuh Stanley, Emmanuel Opara, Nonso Egwu Martin, Ugochukwu Kingsley Ibeh, Ikenna Okonkwo, Felix Nwaeze, Daniel John, Somtochukwu Zadok, Ugochukwu Amoke, and Chukwudi Charles.
The operation yielded impressive results, as the EFCC recovered a range of items from the suspects, including nine luxurious cars, 44 mobile phones, seven personal computers, and an international passport.
Uwujaren emphasized that the arrested suspects have cooperated with the authorities, providing valuable statements.
The EFCC remains dedicated to conducting a thorough investigation into their alleged crimes. Once the investigation is concluded, the suspects will be formally charged before a court of law, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to upholding justice.
The crackdown on this internet fraud syndicate and the subsequent recovery of valuable evidence and assets underscore the determination of law enforcement agencies to combat cybercrime and protect citizens from falling victim to online scams.
