The Nigerian Telecommunications Commission has revealed that Nigeria has been rated seventh in terms of mobile phone usage worldwide.

This was disclosed during the inauguration of the two-day Emerging Technology Forum for the Telecommunications Industry on Thursday in Abuja, adding that the country rated 11th in terms of Internet penetration globally.

Representing the Executive Vice Chairman, Prof Umar Danbatta, Abraham Oshadami highlighted the NRI team’s global data, underscoring the imperative of digital transformation to maximize the societal and economic benefits of the digital era.

This evaluation encompassed aspects such as technology (infrastructure), governance, people, and effect across 131 economies.

Prof Umar Danbatta highlighted Nigeria’s pivotal role in the telecommunications landscape, boasting 82% of the continent’s telecom subscribers and contributing 29% to Africa’s internet consumption.

However, amidst these accomplishments, Nigeria’s Network Readiness Index (NRI) ranking for 2022 at 109th out of 131 countries serves as a reminder of the need for progress.

Danbatta emphasized the significance of prioritizing network preparedness to prevent potential inequalities and ensure widespread participation in the digital economy.

He also emphasized the importance of accessible reskilling and upskilling opportunities to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

He, therefore, urged stakeholders to embrace innovation, strategic investments, and a nurturing ecosystem to navigate this transform6yyative phase.

The Head of New Media and Information Security at NCC, Dr. Chidi Diugwu, also urged stakeholders to leverage NRI insights in shaping policies, investments, and collaborations.

He stressed that investing in human capital and nurturing innovation would empower Nigeria to harness emerging technologies, bridging the digital divide and forging a prosperous digital future.
