In a major crackdown on unlawful mining operations, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended a significant group of 40 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal coal mining in Enugu.
The State Commandant, Mr. Muhammed Dada, confirmed the successful operation during a press briefing held on Friday in Enugu.
Dada revealed that the operation resulted in the seizure of various tools and equipment used for illegal coal mining.
These items included pumping machines, diggers, head-pans, shovels, and notably, four Hanvan G7 trucks found lacking registration numbers.
Further confiscated assets encompassed a Toyota Hilux van bearing registration number MUS 513 HU, two heavy-duty batteries, a substantial quantity of coal, and a motorcycle.
The operation took place on Thursday, August 24, in the vicinity of Ugwuonyeama Hill in Enugu.
The commandant expressed the seriousness of the situation, labeling the activity as a grave economic sabotage.
He underscored the NSCDC’s crucial role as the foremost agency responsible for safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure.
Detailing the operation, Dada explained, “The NSCDC’s intelligence team, acting on a tip-off, conducted a successful raid leading to the arrest of the 40 suspects involved in illegal coal mining at Ugwuonyeama.”
He further emphasized the agency’s commitment to a thorough investigation into the matter, ensuring that those accountable for these illicit activities face appropriate legal consequences.
Dada issued a stern warning to any individuals currently engaged in unauthorized mining within the state, urging them to halt their activities immediately.
Reiterating the NSCDC’s determination, he urged law-abiding citizens to join hands with the agency in curbing such illegal actions by providing valuable information that could aid in ending them.
“Individuals possessing valid clearance and legitimate mining operation licenses will be treated in accordance with the law,” Dada assured.
He concluded by affirming the NSCDC’s steadfast dedication to its mission of protecting the nation’s resources and upholding the integrity of vital assets.
This operation aligns with the agency’s resolute commitment to eradicating illegal activities that undermine the nation’s development and stability.
