In a move to foster transparency and empower local development, the Ogun State Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) disbursed a substantial sum of N5.233 billion to the 20 Local Government Areas within the state.
The announcement of this crucial disbursement was made during the August 2023 JAAC meeting, held at the prestigious Conference Hall within Oba’s Complex, situated in the heart of Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta – the vibrant capital city of Ogun State.
The meeting, graced by the presence of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and other key officials, was chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi.
During his address, Akinlesi emphasized the significance of accountability, transparency, and integrity in local governance.
He urged the local government chairmen, present at the meeting, to effectively represent their constituencies and work towards the advancement of their regions.
Amidst the challenges facing the nation, Akinlesi commended the local government chairmen for their commendable achievements over the past two years and encouraged them to continue implementing impactful developmental projects in their respective areas.
Presenting the financial details, Babatunde Aregbesola, the Permanent Secretary and Accountant-General of the State Treasury, revealed that the substantial sum of N5,233,379,834.30 was accrued to the 20 Local Government Areas of Ogun State in August 2023.
This revenue included components such as Statutory Revenue, Value Added Tax (VAT), and Exchange Difference and Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL).
Aregbesola highlighted that the disbursed funds would primarily cover essential expenditures including primary school teachers’ salaries, local government staff remuneration, allowances for traditional councils, and pensions, among other crucial obligations.
The meeting also received commendations from representatives of various entities, including the Ijebu Traditional Council and the Local Government Pensioners’ Association of Nigeria.
The representatives praised the state government for their consistent efforts in conducting these meetings, which have proven instrumental in ensuring accuracy and transparency in the allocation of funds to local governments across the state.
