Yusuf Anas, a former police officer who had been dismissed from the force, found himself in handcuffs once again.

This time, he’s accused of impersonation and theft by the vigilant officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 17 in Akure, Ondo State.

Anas’ alleged misdeeds unraveled when he purchased a mobile phone from a store and, cunningly, sent a counterfeit bank transfer alert to the seller, falsely indicating that he had successfully transferred the payment.

The suspect’s checkered history reveals that he entered the Force as a Constable back in 2016 and served in Sokoto and Lagos states before being declared a deserter and ultimately dismissed.

Akeem Adeoye, the spokesperson for NPF Zone 17 Command, officially confirmed Anas’ apprehension in a statement released on Wednesday.

Adeoye revealed that Anas had been masquerading as a law enforcement officer despite his dismissal, and the arrest was made possible thanks to a petition filed with the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in the zone.

“On the 8th of May 2023, the suspect, still donned in his police uniform, ventured to acquire a Techno-Spark10 handset worth one hundred and two thousand naira (N102,000) from a mobile phone store. Subsequently, he fabricated a false bank transfer to the vendor,” Adeoye narrated.

The spokesperson further explained that the crime was promptly reported via a petition to the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 17, and the suspect was apprehended through effective intelligence operations.

Anas, during questioning, reportedly confessed to the alleged crime, and authorities are poised to ensure he faces the full weight of the law.
