In a bid to ensure a smooth academic session, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, pleads with students, parents, and lecturers to refrain from actions that could disrupt universities as they prepare to reopen.

This appeal was made during a meeting with the leadership of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) in Abuja on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

Dr. Sununu stressed the importance of restraint, emphasizing that it would benefit all stakeholders and maintain stability within the educational system.

He assured ongoing constructive dialogues regarding student welfare, staff conditions, and infrastructure enhancement in tertiary institutions.

Addressing the looming threat of strikes and facility underutilization, Dr. Sununu vowed to uphold President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to prevent further industrial actions.

CONUA President Niyi Sunmonu expressed concerns about potential unrest due to increased tuition fees, which could disrupt the academic calendar.

He urged the government to address the deteriorating conditions of academic and non-academic staff, citing the impact of petroleum subsidy removal.

Furthermore, he called for a resolution to the issue of eight-month salary arrears stemming from the last Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, highlighting that CONUA members did not participate in the strike.
