In a heartbreaking turn of events, a grieving husband, Mr. Festus Godson Egede, has taken legal action against Eku Baptist/General Hospital, Delta State, its medical team, and the state government, alleging professional negligence that resulted in the untimely demise of his 33-year-old wife, Mrs. Anesther Egede.
Mr. Egede’s legal pursuit, documented in a summons obtained by Metro PUNCH, sheds light on a harrowing medical ordeal.
The suit (HCI/44/2023) places Eku Baptist/General Hospital, the Delta state government, the hospital’s Managing Director, Dr. Totibo, and others as defendants.
The tragic story unfolds with Mr. Egede recounting that Dr. Ebom Totibo, a physician at Eku Baptist/General Hospital, purportedly left cotton wool inside his wife’s abdomen following surgery, ultimately leading to her tragic demise.
Mr. Egede shared, “My wife, Mrs. Egede Anesther, initially sought medical attention for abdominal pain at Catholic Hospital Obiaruku, where she received a scan indicating appendicitis.
However, the hospital suggested that the appendicitis wasn’t severe enough to warrant immediate surgery.”
Undeterred by persistent pain, Mr. Egede sought a second opinion at Eku Baptist/General Hospital, where Dr. Totibo recommended another scan and subsequently performed the surgery.
Tragically, post-operation complications arose, and Mrs. Egede’s condition worsened.
An MRI scan conducted at Lily Hospital, Benin City, Edo State, revealed a shocking oversight—the medical team had left a substantial cotton wool inside her abdomen.
The grieving family has already filed a complaint against the hospital for negligence, and Mr. Egede met with the Delta State Hospital Management Board to address the issue.
Efforts to obtain a response from the hospital’s Managing Director, Dr. Mrs. Etaghene Harietta, were inconclusive as she redirected inquiries to the health ministry.
Meanwhile, attempts to contact the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, went unanswered at the time of this report.
