Anambra Governor Honours Literary Icon, Chinua Achebe With International Airport Renaming

In a significant tribute to the late literary luminary, Prof. Chinua Achebe, Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has unveiled plans to rename the Anambra International Airport.

The announcement came during the Independence Day celebration at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, where Governor Soludo declared the airport’s new name as “Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri.”

During his address, Governor Soludo emphasized his commitment to propel the state’s rapid development, affirming that Anambra would overcome its challenges.

He commended the tradition of naming various projects after those who contributed to Nigeria’s independence in 1960 but noted that most honorees held public office.

Soludo’s administration, however, intends to break away from this pattern by recognizing Achebe’s monumental contributions beyond the realm of politics.

The governor articulated, “We must acknowledge that one does not need a political position to make significant contributions to our civilization.

Henceforth, we will actively seek out and celebrate our unsung heroes, inspiring our youth with a diverse array of role models, including outstanding educators, medical professionals, individuals of unimpeachable integrity, philanthropists of known repute, visionary entrepreneurs, community builders, devoted clergy, and more.”

Prof. Soludo then paid heartfelt tribute to the late Prof. Chinua Achebe, acknowledging him as an exemplar of an unsung African hero.

While Achebe didn’t hold political office or construct infrastructure, his literary prowess endowed African literature with a distinctive voice and identity, reshaping perceptions of the continent.

Governor Soludo asserted, “Achebe’s impact transcends regional or national boundaries; he is a global and African icon, yet largely uncelebrated at home.”

In recognition of Achebe’s enduring legacy, Governor Soludo declared the renaming of the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport in Umueri to “Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri.”

He also expressed the aspiration to collaborate with the Federal Government to fully realize the airport’s international status, ensuring that Achebe’s name echoes worldwide.
