The Peoples Democratic Party has faulted President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress over attempts to blame the opposition for the hunger and economic hardship confronting Nigerians.
The opposition party insisted that the APC-led government must take responsibility for its policies and address the worsening living conditions of citizens instead of engaging in what it described as a blame game.
The PDP stated its position in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, also referred to as Jungudo Haruna Mohammed.
The statement followed remarks by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, during an appearance on News Central’s Breakfast Show, as well as comments reportedly made by Tinubu at the APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna on Saturday.
The President had blamed the opposition for creating hunger and poverty while maintaining that his administration was working to eliminate the problems.
However, the PDP rejected the claims, describing them as an attempt to evade responsibility and divert public attention from the economic challenges facing the country under the ruling party.
“The PDP is not responsible for the hunger Nigerians are experiencing today. The APC must own its record, address the nation’s challenges, and deliver on its promises to Nigerians,” the statement said.
The party challenged the Federal Government to explain what concrete measures it was implementing to make food affordable, support farmers and strengthen domestic food production.
It also demanded clear strategies to create jobs, improve security, tackle corruption, increase electricity supply, reduce transportation costs and restore the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.
According to the opposition party, these are the critical issues confronting households across the country and should take priority over political exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition.
“After more than APC’s 10 years in office, Nigerians deserve answers, not excuses,” Mohammed said.
The PDP further argued that the government must present a credible roadmap for economic recovery, food security and improved living standards rather than shift responsibility for the country’s difficulties to previous administrations.
“The government in power must answer for its stewardship and present a credible path towards economic recovery, food security, and a better standard of living for all Nigerians,” the statement added.
While acknowledging that the Tinubu administration might have recorded some achievements, the PDP said such recognition should not be interpreted as an endorsement of all its policies or an acceptance of attempts to blame previous PDP-led governments for the current hardship.
The party maintained that every administration should be assessed on the basis of its policies, performance and the actual conditions of the people it governs.
The PDP governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015 before the APC took power in 2015..
