In a scathing open letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Nigeria’s Independence Day, the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity (NAS/PC), has raised serious concerns about the ongoing insecurity crisis in the country.
The letter, signed by NAS Capoon Abiola Owoaje, highlights several pressing issues and calls for immediate action from the President’s administration.
… Insecurity Persists Despite Promises
President Tinubu’s administration had promised a “secure, prosperous, and united Nigeria,” but according to NAS/PC, this promise remains unfulfilled.
The organization points out that insecurity, which was a major concern before Tinubu took office, continues to escalate.
The change in leadership of the security forces did not yield the expected results, as insurgents and non-state actors operate unchecked across the nation.
Data provided by SBM Intelligence and the Council on Foreign Relations National Security Tracker (NST) show a grim picture of the security situation during the first three months of Tinubu’s presidency.
Over 600 Nigerians were killed, and more than 276 were kidnapped during this period.
Banditry and insurgent activities have expanded their grip, with reports suggesting that 23 local government areas in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi states are under their control.
… Regional Insecurity Challenges
In addition to the northern regions, insecurity has spread to other parts of Nigeria.
In the South-East, terrorists have been causing havoc, and security personnel have been ambushed and killed.
In the South-South, oil theft remains a major concern, with incidents of violence against law enforcement officers.
Kidnappings are on the rise in the South-West, and Fulani herdsmen continue to engage in a campaign of terror in Benue and Plateau States.
… Economic Policies Criticized
NAS/PC also criticizes President Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly the decision to remove fuel subsidies without a clear strategy to mitigate the impact on Nigerians.
This move has led to increased poverty and destitution, adding to the already high number of Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty.
The unification of the naira exchange rate has not prevented the currency’s depreciation, and inflation has surged to 25.8%.
Food inflation is even higher at 29.34%, and unemployment rates remain alarming, with youth unemployment at 53.4%.
… Insensitive Salary Increments
Furthermore, the organization denounces the proposal by the Revenue Allocation Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission (RAMFC) to increase salaries for political leaders, including the President, Vice-President, and lawmakers.
NAS/PC sees this as a display of insensitivity and poor leadership.
… Recommendations for President Tinubu
In light of these pressing issues, NAS/PC makes several recommendations to President Tinubu’s administration.
First and foremost, they urge decisive action to address insecurity, including the adoption of a decentralized policing system.
They also call for improved collaboration among security agencies, with an emphasis on gathering intelligence and winning the trust of local communities.
Regarding the economy, NAS/PC believes that the newly appointed CBN Governor, Mr. Yemi Cardoso, should be given the autonomy and independence needed to rescue the naira and stabilize the economy.
Additionally, they call for investments in small and medium-scale industries, agriculture, and manufacturing to stimulate economic growth. Increasing electricity supply is seen as a critical step in achieving this goal.

The open letter concludes with a call for swift action from President Tinubu’s administration to address these urgent concerns.
NAS/PC emphasizes that these issues require immediate attention if the President is truly committed to improving the state of the nation.
