In a shocking revelation, the suspected killers of Justice Margaret Igbetar, the retired President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Makurdi, Benue State, have confessed to her murder, citing a bitter family property dispute as the motive.
The assailants, who invaded her residence on August 24, 2023, have been apprehended and identified, shedding light on the tragic incident.
Commissioner of Police, Batholomew Onyeka, disclosed that the mastermind behind this heinous act was the deceased’s own nephew, Aondohemba Joseph. Joseph allegedly led a gang of individuals to her residence, where she met her untimely demise.
Other suspects, including the late judge’s driver, a security guard, and additional family members, were also apprehended.
The CP revealed, “The suspect (nephew) who eventually confessed to planning and recruiting others to assist in killing his aunt led a team of detectives to Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area, where additional suspects were arrested.”
These suspects confessed that the murder was orchestrated because Joseph believed his father’s property, held by the deceased, was wrongfully withheld from him.
Their chilling admission paints a grim picture of familial discord turned deadly.
Furthermore, the Commissioner highlighted the broader efforts of law enforcement, noting that between July and September 2023, the police had apprehended 85 suspects involved in various crimes, including kidnapping, culpable homicide, armed robbery, cultism, rape, and unlawful possession of firearms.
The authorities also rescued seven kidnapped victims during this period and confiscated a substantial cache of weapons, underlining their commitment to maintaining law and order in Benue State.
