In a dramatic turn of events at the Senate’s plenary session on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, Balarabe Lawal, the ministerial nominee who slumped during his screening, has been officially confirmed as a minister.
President Bola Tinubu had forwarded Lawal’s nomination, along with those of two other candidates, leading to their thorough scrutiny by the Senate.
Lawal, hailing from Kaduna State, was successfully confirmed as a minister, alongside Dr. Jamila Ibrahim representing Kwara State and Ayodele Olawande from Ondo State.
Previously reported by The Star, Lawal’s screening was marked by his sudden collapse, which prompted a closed-door session.
However, he was later revived, allowing the screening to continue.
During her introduction, Ibrahim, born in 1986, emphasized her unwavering belief in the potential of Nigerian youths and expressed her determination to contribute to nation-building in a government that prioritizes the youth.
She cited her education, upbringing, and career as valuable assets for the task ahead. Ibrahim pledged to work towards providing opportunities for youth education, development, and entrepreneurship.
Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu confirmed Lawal’s revival after the incident.
Notably, this confirmation adds three new ministers to the government, bringing the total number to 48, as the Senate had previously approved 45 out of the 48 ministerial nominees submitted by President Tinubu on August 7.
