Eighteen political parties participating in the forthcoming Kogi governorship election, scheduled for November 11, have joined hands on Wednesday to sign a peace accord.
This pivotal event brought together key players in Nigerian politics, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Labour Party, and the Action Alliance.
The signing of the peace accord took place in Kogi State and was presided over by the Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar (rtd), who emphasized the importance of adhering to the agreement for a harmonious electoral process. Gen. Abubakar was represented at the event by Cardinal John Onaiyekan.
Addressing the attendees, Gen. Abubakar expressed his concerns about the past effectiveness of such peace accords, stating, “This is because it has become a ritual of signing with no fruitful results or meeting up the expectations of the Nigerian citizens.
The players should know that we can’t be deceived over and over again.” He urged all governorship candidates to approach the peace accord with seriousness and dedication, recognizing the impact it could have on the nation’s future.
Gen. Abubakar continued, “I’m optimistic that if we do things in the right way, the nation will prosper. And this is my hope and prayers.
“If the major players of this accord will play the game according to the rules of the game, we shall be better off as a nation. Therefore, we expect them to keep this accord and ensure that the election of Saturday, Nov. 11 will be free, fair, and peaceful.”
