The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced on Sunday night the adjournment of result collation in Bayelsa election until Monday noon, November 13, 2023.
So far, results from six out of the eight local government areas in Bayelsa State have been successfully collated, which include Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Yenegoa, Sagbama, Nembe, and Ekeremor.
The two remaining local government areas yet to be included in the collation process are Brass and Southern Ijaw.
The adjournment was declared by Prof. Faruq Kuta, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and the appointed Returning Officer for the Bayelsa election.
A total of 16 political parties sponsored candidates for this crucial election in Bayelsa, where Governor Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faced off against his main opponent, former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-governor of the state, Timipre Sylva, who represented the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the poll.
Sylva had previously served as Bayelsa’s governor in two separate tenures.
In a concurrent political landscape, governorship polls also took place in Imo and Kogi states on the preceding Saturday.
INEC has already declared a winner in Imo, where Governor Hope Uzodimma of the APC secured victory by defeating Samuel Anyanwu of the PDP and other contenders from the Labour Party (LP), with Uzodimma polling 540,308 votes against Anyanwu’s 71,503 and Achonu’s 64,081 votes.
