Labour Delegation Presents 6 Key Demands For Strike Suspension After Government Meeting

In a recent meeting with the National Security Adviser, Labour union representatives, including members of the NLC and TUC, discussed promises and appeals from the government regarding the attack on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and other issues.

The President of the TUC, Festus Osifo, stated that decisions on ending the strike will be taken after informing the labor organs of the discussions held.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Simon Lalong, described the discussions as fruitful, genuine, and frank, emphasizing that ongoing talks aim for a resolution without a prolonged strike.

Meanwhile, the NLC outlined six conditions that must be met before considering the suspension of the nationwide strike.

These conditions include the arrest and prosecution of Chinasa Nwaneri, a Special Adviser to the Imo governor, who allegedly led the attack on the NLC president.

The NLC also demanded the arrest, prosecution, and dismissal of police officers, thugs, and government officials involved in the assault.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Bako Lalong, and the Minister of State for Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha, were present at the meeting alongside labor leaders.

The NLC and TUC initiated the nationwide strike to protest the arrest and brutalization of NLC President Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, 2023.

The unions stress that their demands are straightforward: they seek justice for the attacked workers.
