Terrorists Ambush Yobe Governor’s Convoy, Kill Two Policemen

In a brazen attack along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road, Boko Haram terrorists targeted the convoy of Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni, resulting in the tragic deaths of two policemen on Saturday.

The assailants struck between Beneshiekh and Mainok, leaving several others injured.

Governor Buni, having already departed for Abuja from Maiduguri after attending the University of Maiduguri’s 24th convocation, narrowly avoided the ambush.

The terrorists, firing from both sides of the expressway, initially aimed at the convoy’s pilot but fatally struck one policeman instantly.

Another officer succumbed to bullet wounds, bleeding to death before reaching the hospital.

An eyewitness, an aide to Governor Buni, recounted the harrowing incident, revealing, “We narrowly escaped death today.

The convoy was attacked between Beneshiekh and Mainok, a distance of less than sixty kilometers to Damaturu after attending the 24th convocation of the University of Maiduguri.”

This attack marks the first on the Yobe State governor’s convoy since the insurgency began in 2010.

While Borno State, another terrorism epicenter, has experienced such assaults on the Governor’s convoy in the past, this incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by the region.

In 2022, terrorists believed to be bandits targeted the convoy of the advance party of former President Muhammadu Buhari on their way to Daura, Katsina State, further emphasizing the persistent threat posed by extremist groups in Nigeria.
