In a bid to foster progress and empower higher education institutions, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the government’s contemplation of reintroducing the Policy of University Full Autonomy.
The move, disclosed by Minister Abubakar Momoh at the University of Benin’s 48th convocation ceremony, reflects the government’s belief that university autonomy will pave the way for individualized development.
Tinubu expressed confidence in the proposed policy, emphasizing that it would shift the responsibility of performance directly to the institutions, offering a remedy to the current uncertainties.
Acknowledging concerns over months of unpaid salaries, Tinubu addressed the issue by announcing a four-month salary payment for all university workers.
However, he clarified that this should not undermine the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.
The commitment to addressing the challenges facing universities doesn’t stop at salary payments.
Tinubu pledged to enhance conditions through infrastructure development using the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The provision of lecture theaters, student hostels, administrative offices, and learning tools aims to motivate both staff and students.
“As a responsible government, we would continue to dedicate tangible resources to education and formulate sustainable policies that would outlive this administration,” assured Tinubu.
He stressed the multifaceted responsibilities of universities, urging them to contribute to research, technological breakthroughs, and the development of an entrepreneurial outlook.
Minister Momoh echoed the President’s sentiments, appreciating the University of Benin’s leadership, with special recognition for the Chancellor, Orcivirigh Professor James Ortese Ayatse, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Lilian Salami.
Momoh commended the institution’s remarkable milestones and extended the President’s congratulations to the graduates, wishing them success in their future endeavors.
