Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, asserts that Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, is witnessing a troubling surge in modern-day slavery.

Citing the Walk Free Organisation’s 2023 Global Slavery Index, Obi highlights Nigeria’s grim ranking as fifth in Africa and 38th globally among 160 countries in terms of the prevalence of modern slavery.

Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, emphasizes the urgent need to address the alarming situation, noting that the recent spike in insecurity and poverty has exacerbated the number of individuals subjected to modern slavery, including forced child labor and sexual exploitation.

The Walk Free Organisation’s report indicates that, on any given day in 2021, 1.6 million individuals were living in modern slavery in Nigeria.

Quoting data from Innovations for Poverty Action, Obi further reveals that approximately one million Nigerians are trafficked each year, positioning Nigeria as a significant source, hub, and destination country for human trafficking.

In response to these distressing statistics, Obi calls for concerted efforts by the Nigerian government and stakeholders to completely abolish the shameful practice of slavery, envisioning a New Nigeria free from the scourge of human exploitation.

Obi concludes, emphasizing the necessity for the nation to uphold the dignity of its citizens, stating, “Ours should be a land of dignity for all citizens, and slavery, in any form, will have no place in the New Nigeria we all look forward to.”
