In the aftermath of the accidental bombing in Tundun Biri, Kaduna State, Islamic Clerics hailing from the Northern region, united under the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, engaged in a closed-door meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa.
The tragic incident, which claimed over 100 innocent lives and left dozens injured, prompted a crucial dialogue between religious leaders and the military.
PLATFORM TIMES had reported the devastating accidental airstrikes carried out by the Nigerian Army, intensifying concerns about civilian casualties in conflict zones.
In response to these concerns, the Northern clerics, led by Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar, sought answers and assurances during their visit to Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Gen. Musa, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, vowed that the military had swiftly initiated actions to investigate the incident thoroughly.
“We will do everything possible to get to the bottom and ensure it happens no more,” asserted Gen. Musa during a briefing by the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, after the closed-door meeting.
The Chief of Defence Staff expressed an “undaunting commitment” to maintaining peace in the country and assured the clerics that steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future, despite existing security challenges, particularly in the North West.
Dr Bashir, in his response, lauded Gen. Musa for a leadership style he described as “people-centric” and commended the Chief of Defence Staff for displaying empathy in the aftermath of the accidental airstrikes.
The cleric noted visible and positive changes in the overall security architecture of the country under Gen. Musa’s leadership.
However, the meeting went beyond a discussion of military actions. Dr Bashir took the opportunity to call on leaders across various sectors to avoid leading affluent lifestyles while a significant portion of the population endures abject poverty.
This appeal for social responsibility resonated with broader concerns about economic inequalities and the role of leadership in addressing societal imbalances.
As investigations into the accidental bombing continue, the dialogue between the Northern clerics and the military signifies a collaborative effort towards accountability and preventing similar tragedies.
