In a decisive move against corruption within the police force, the Commissioner of Police for Oyo State, Adebola Hamzat, has taken swift action by ordering the immediate dismissal of two Special Constabulary officers.
The officers, identified as Jimoh Lukman and Kareem Fatai, were publicly paraded at the Oyo State Police Command, Eleyele, Ibadan.
The dismissal stems from an incident captured in a viral video where Lukman and Fatai were caught demanding money from a Dutch tourist.
The tourist, riding a power bike from the Netherlands en route to Abuja, found himself targeted by the two officers engaging in extortion.
The video, which circulated widely, displayed the officers in the act of soliciting a bribe from the foreigner, prompting public outcry and demands for accountability.
To emphasize the gravity of their actions, Lukman and Fatai were stripped of their Nigerian Police uniforms during the public parade, a symbolic act confirming their immediate exit from constabulary service.
Commissioner Adebola Hamzat underscored the commitment to maintaining integrity within the police force, emphasizing that their dismissal followed a recommendation from the orderly room investigation.
He echoed the stance of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), emphasizing the zero-tolerance policy for corrupt practices within the Nigerian police.
Addressing the media, CP Adebola stated, “Such conduct, which I describe as embarrassing, will not be condoned from any officer.”
He made it clear that the disgraced constabularies would not face prosecution in court, as they were not originally trained officers of the Nigerian police.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to weed out corruption within law enforcement agencies, and it highlights the importance of maintaining public trust in the police force.
