In a recent development, security operatives successfully apprehended a group of notorious cultists in Ilesa, Osun, following their alleged attack on an Amotekun unit deployed for security duties during the Iwude Ijesa festival.
The arrest was carried out by a collaborative effort between Amotekun and the police after residents reported the illicit activities of the suspected cultists in the area.
The detained individuals, identified as Kareem Ojo (32), Adedamola Salamo (26), Olatunji Ezekiel (24), Adeyeye Adekunle (33), and Tope Oguntade (35), were not only involved in cult-related activities but were also found to be dealing in illicit drugs.
The arrests took place at various locations within the town, with the suspects in possession of dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, axes, and charms.
Brigadier-General Bashir Adewinmbi, the Commandant of Osun State’s Amotekun Corp, confirmed the successful operation on Tuesday.
According to Adewinmbi, the arrests occurred between Thursday and Monday, following numerous complaints from residents about the suspects’ disruptive activities in the town.
Adewinmbi disclosed that the apprehended individuals had long been on the wanted list of the Osun Police Anti-Cultism Unit, highlighting their notorious presence in Ilesa.
The cultists, known to have terrorized the town for an extended period, also targeted the Amotekun unit during a lawful operation.
The Amotekun Anti-Cultism Squad promptly responded to the residents’ complaints, leading to the arrest of the suspects at different locations.
During subsequent interrogations, the culprits confessed to being members of the Eiye Confraternity and revealed their prolonged affiliation with the cult.
“These individuals have been on the radar of the Osun Police Anti-Cultism Unit for an extended period before their luck finally ran out,” Adewinmbi stated.
The apprehended suspects have now been handed over to the Police Anti-Cultism Unit for further investigation and prosecution.
