Kano LG Chairmen Challenge  Gov In Court Over Flyover Funding

Chairmen representing the 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State have taken legal action against the state government’s plans to construct two flyovers in the city.

The legal move materialized with the filing of a lawsuit before the Federal High Court, Abuja, under case number FHC/ABJ/CS/1733/2023 on December 29, 2023.

The chairmen contest the state government’s decision to allocate 70% of their joint account funds for the construction of flyovers at Tal’udu and Danagundi.

The plaintiffs, consisting of the 44 Local Government Councils and the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, are seeking a court order to prevent the state government from utilizing their funds from the joint account.

However, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defended the state government’s position during the foundation-laying ceremony for the flyovers on Friday evening.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that using the joint account, managed collaboratively by both state and local governments, for financing large-scale projects has been a longstanding tradition, continuing from his predecessors.

In his address at the ceremony, Governor Yusuf underscored the importance of the flyover projects, stating that upon completion, they would serve all local government areas regularly.

“The purpose of these projects is to alleviate traffic congestion, facilitate smoother travel, enhance the city’s aesthetics, control pollution, and bolster infrastructure in the ancient city,” Governor Yusuf explained.
