The 10th House of Representatives, under the dynamic leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abba, has marked an unprecedented legislative accomplishment by passing a total of 1615 bills within the span of six months.

This significant achievement was announced by Speaker Abba during a plenary session held in Abuja on Saturday, just before the House adjourned for the New Year break.

The legislative matters addressed encompassed a wide spectrum, including 962 bills, 500 motions, and 153 petitions.

Speaker Abba, in emphasizing the House’s dedication to legislative excellence, reported that out of these, 120 bills have successfully passed the crucial second reading.

He further highlighted that these bills are currently undergoing rigorous review and refinement to address concerns raised during debates, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring the highest quality legislation.

The House has taken a meticulous approach to the legislative process, referring an additional 120 bills to committees for in-depth analysis. Speaker Abba underscored the importance of thorough examination, emphasizing the House’s dedication to ensuring that each bill meets the highest standards before being passed into law.

In addition to this remarkable feat, the House successfully transmitted many bills to the Senate for concurrence. Notable among these bills were the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Federal Audit Service Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Other significant legislative accomplishments include the approval of the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Oath Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2023.

Speaker Abba elaborated on the broader purpose of these bills, stating, “All these bills are intended to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions to the challenges that have plagued our society.

Through these bills, we aim to empower our citizens, enhance social justice, promote economic growth, and ensure peace and security.”

Over the same period, the House demonstrated its responsiveness to the needs of the nation by receiving and resolving over 500 motions.

These motions addressed pressing national matters such as oil theft, student loans, job racketeering, JAMB, and firearms. Speaker Abba emphasized the potency of motions as the most potent tools of legislative representation, showcasing the House’s role in articulating the needs of the people.

Commending his colleagues for their unwavering support, Speaker Abba expressed gratitude and noted that “The House has demonstrated a commitment to foster a harmonious and professional relationship with the executive.”

As the House enters a new legislative session, the accomplishment of passing 1615 bills stands as a testament to their commitment to effective governance and responsiveness to the needs of the Nigerian people.
