In a recent development, the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted bail to Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Earlier, both Edu and her predecessor, Sadiya Umar-Farouk, had their passports seized to prevent them from fleeing the country during ongoing investigations into alleged fraud.
A source within the EFCC revealed that Edu, like her predecessor, will be required to report daily to the EFCC headquarters while the investigation unfolds.
Edu is under scrutiny for her involvement in the transfer of N585 million to a private account owned by Oniyelu Bridget, the alleged Project Accountant for Grants for Vulnerable Groups.
According to a letter dated December 20, 2023, and signed by Edu, the payment of N585,189,500.00 was approved for the Renewed Hope Grant for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, and Ogun States. The funds were allocated as follows: N219,429,750.00 for Akwa Ibom, N73,828,750.00 for Cross River, N219,462,250.00 for Lagos, and N72,468,750.00 for Ogun.
The letter directed the payment to be made to a UBA account (2003682151) belonging to Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola. It specified that the transfer should occur from the National Social Investment Officer account with account number 0020208461037 to the mentioned Project Accountant’s details.
As the investigation continues, both Edu and Umar-Farouk are now subject to daily reporting to the EFCC headquarters as a condition of their release on bail.
