The leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo,has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive to service chiefs, denouncing it as an inadequate response to the pervasive insecurity in Plateau State and across the nation.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the Jos residence of late Chief Solomon Lar, a former Governor of Plateau State and the first National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adebanjo expressed concern about the security challenges faced by the country.
He cautioned against adopting the same approach as former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting that mere “marching orders” proved ineffective during Buhari’s tenure.
Adebanjo, accompanied by fellow Afenifere chieftains, emphasized the urgency for President Tinubu to address the root causes of insecurity. He stated, “We want action from President Tinubu and not marching orders.
Anybody who wants to impress Nigerians must go after those behind the killings. They must be arrested and prosecuted if he wants the problem to be solved.”
During his visit, Adebanjo also met with state dignitaries, including the wife of late Chief Solomon Lar, Prof Mary Lar, former Minister of Aviation Samuel Mafuyai, former House of Representatives member Beni Lar, Plateau State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development Joshua Ubandoma, and Special Adviser to Plateau State Governor Olivia Dazyem.
Earlier engagements with the state Governor and the Gbong Gwom Jos underscored Adebanjo’s unwavering stance on the need for decisive action against the perpetrators of the recent attacks.
He insisted that for Tinubu to succeed in addressing insecurity, those responsible for the killings must face legal consequences.
Adebanjo lamented the lack of accountability during Buhari’s term, stating, “When Buhari was in office, we said he was behind those killing Nigerians. We want action and not marching orders. In the end, nothing happens. No arrest even after our complaints.”
Expressing condolences to the victims’ families, Adebanjo called on the people of Plateau State to remain resilient in the face of adversity.
He highlighted the legacy of late Chief Solomon Lar, a staunch advocate for peace and justice, urging citizens to resist the tactics of invaders.
Prof Mary Lar, in gratitude for the visit, commended Adebanjo for his unwavering support and emphasized the importance of justice for lasting peace and unity in the country.
She fondly recalled her association with Afenifere and late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s residence, expressing appreciation for the continued unity efforts across various regions.
In a poignant reflection on the values of a good name over material wealth, Prof Mary Lar asserted, “We must stop pursuing wealth and embrace a good name for the good of our country.”
