Panic gripped Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School in Oko Afo, Lagos, as students staged a protest following the alleged death of their fellow student, David Babadipo, reportedly due to being flogged by a teacher named Oluwale.
The incident unfolded on Thursday when 16-year-old David, who had been unwell for several days, was purportedly subjected to corporal punishment by the teacher. Subsequently, he was rushed to a hospital but tragically confirmed dead.
A circulated video depicted chaotic scenes within and around the school premises as students reacted to the news. Voices in the background claimed that David was flogged by a teacher when he tried to go out to purchase something.
Reacting to the video, a resident, Mama Sassy D, expressed concern, stating, “This is my vicinity. They have started rioting already. The said teacher might not survive this period.”
Contrary to the claims, Facebook user Esther Wusu contested the narrative, asserting that Mr. Oluwale was the school’s vice principal, and the student had been sick since Tuesday. Wusu claimed that the teacher did not beat the student and highlighted that the parent had not taken him to the hospital.
However, another Facebook user, Bangose Jide, asserted that Mr. Olawale, identified as the vice principal, had allegedly beaten David to death.
The incident has been reported to the Morogbo Police Station, but the police are yet to confirm the report.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the school proved futile, as calls to the contact phone number went unanswered, and a text inquiry received no response.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has not provided confirmation or details on the case as of the time of this report.
