Paul University, Awka, Anambra State, has suspended an Anglican priest and member of its academic support staff, Ven. Cornelius C. Eze, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student.
The university disclosed on Friday that the staff member had been placed on indefinite suspension pending the outcome of internal disciplinary proceedings and a police investigation into the incident.
The institution, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Rev. Godisplan Onukwufor, said the accused serves as a Practical Biology Technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences.
According to the statement, the university management became aware of the allegation on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, and immediately invited security agencies to the campus to prevent a breakdown of law and order following tensions generated by the incident.
It explained that the suspension was an administrative action taken without prejudice to the outcome of the ongoing disciplinary process and criminal investigation.
The development followed widespread circulation of a video on social media purportedly showing the staff member fleeing from his office during a commotion.
However, the university did not confirm the authenticity of the viral footage or comment on the circumstances surrounding the recording.
The incident had initially sparked confusion online after claims emerged that it occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
But UNIZIK had earlier distanced itself from the matter, clarifying that neither the staff member nor the student involved was affiliated with the institution.
With Paul University confirming the identity of the accused as its employee, the institution also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment.
The university stated that it operates a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse of office, immoral conduct and any behaviour capable of threatening the safety, dignity or welfare of students and staff.
It added that anyone found culpable after due process would face disciplinary sanctions in line with the university’s regulations and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The institution further disclosed that counselling and psychological support would be provided to the affected student or students, as well as other members of the university community who might require assistance.
It urged members of the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information while assuring parents, students and staff that it would continue to provide updates as investigations progress.
