In a surprising turn of events at the Ogun State House of Assembly, the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide on Tuesday, decided to step down a motion seeking to suspend former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo for fourteen legislative days.
The motion, moved by Hon. Dr. Babatunde Tella and co-sponsored by five other lawmakers, accused Oluomo of actions detrimental to the well-being and image of the House.
During the debate, Deputy Chief Whip Hon. Tella expressed serious concern over Oluomo’s behaviour, highlighting his unfriendly disposition and disregard for the laws governing the House.
Tella pointed out that Oluomo had taken the House to court without following the due process outlined in the Legislative Powers and Privileges Act of 2018.
In a plea to his fellow lawmakers, Speaker Elemide emphasised the importance of peace and tranquility for the state’s progress.
While acknowledging Oluomo’s violation of House regulations, Elemide urged his colleagues to consider the greater good and suspend action on the matter.
He stressed the need for unity to support the efforts of the Dapo Abiodun-led administration in transforming the state.
Despite the violation by Oluomo, the Speaker insisted on upholding the institution’s sanity, portraying it as a symbol of democracy.
This decision resonated with several lawmakers who spoke in support of the motion, including Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, Adegoke Adeyanju, Oluseun Adesanya, and Waliu Owode.
They argued that Oluomo’s activities were clear violations of the House’s rules and regulations.
Interestingly, the Assembly also took a moment to observe silence in honour of the late artist and cultural icon, Pa Jimi Solanke, who passed away the day before at the age of 81.
The legislative session showcased a mix of tension and unity as the lawmakers deliberated on the motion while also paying respects to a cultural figure who left an indelible mark on the state.
