In a significant move, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has endorsed the creation of a Permanent Joint Commission between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

The nod came during a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, where the Nigeria Advocacy Group for the Establishment of a Permanent Joint Commission presented their case.

Led by Ambassador Oguntuase Kayode, Chairman of the group’s Governing Board, the delegation discussed the importance of revitalizing the existing Nigeria-Benin Joint Commission, which had slowed down in 2014.

Minister Tuggar acknowledged its organic resurgence, highlighting the bilateral efforts between the two nations.

“This initiative involving the private sector and civil society is laudable.

It goes beyond governments and emphasizes the engagement of various stakeholders to reinforce ties,” stated Minister Tuggar.

He emphasized the significance of addressing border issues, linking security challenges to development deficiencies in border areas.

Despite occasional disputes, the friendly relations between Nigeria and Benin were recognized.

Ambassador Oguntuase Kayode expressed optimism, calling the establishment of the proposed Nigeria-Benin Republic Joint Commission timely.

He highlighted the success of similar commissions with neighboring countries and stressed the geo-strategic importance of forging a strategic partnership to regulate and coordinate beneficial relations between the two nations.
