In a dramatic turn of events, three family members kidnapped while conveying the remains of their late brother, Israel Ugwuanyi, have been released.
The harrowing incident occurred over the weekend as the family was en route to Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in the Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu.
Earlier reports suggested that hoodlums had seized the corpse and abducted the family members, causing widespread concern.
However, the Enugu State Police Commissioner, Kanayo Uzuegbu, dismissed the kidnapping allegations on Tuesday, labelling it a “family squabble” and stating that the deceased’s body had been deposited in a mortuary.
Contradicting the police commissioner’s statement, the family refuted the claims, insisting that their ordeal was indeed a kidnapping.
Matters took a positive turn when an undisclosed ransom was paid, leading to the release of the three family members on Thursday afternoon.
A family source expressed gratitude, saying, “Praise God the most High, for His mercy endures forever! There is a massive celebration and rejoicing happening around Umabor.”
The joyous occasion also saw the release of an individual who delivered the ransom and was initially held captive.
Collins Ugwuanyi, the elder brother of the victims, confirmed the release, stating, “Our brothers were released this afternoon after four days in kidnappers’ captivity. We give God all the glory.”
The family now looks forward to properly laying Israel Ugwuanyi to rest, relieved that their loved ones are safe once again.
