In a surprising turn of events, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has issued a public apology for his recent claim that N30 billion was distributed to each state government during a Senate session.
The apology, conveyed through a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon Eseme Eyiboh, expressed regret for the negative impact his words may have had on the governors.
The statement clarified the context of Akpabio’s remarks during the presentation of a joint committee report on Finance, Agriculture/Food Sufficiency, Banking, and Insurance.
According to the released statement, Akpabio acknowledged misconceptions in the public domain and emphasized that the cumulative sum mentioned was an unverified figure related to Federal Government interventions aimed at addressing food shortages at the sub-national level.
Akpabio regretted the unfortunate conjectures surrounding his statement, emphasizing that the motive behind his remarks was to encourage state governments to collaborate with the Federal government led by President Bola Tinubu.
The intention was to facilitate strategic interventions to alleviate the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
Recognizing the vital role of state governments as functional partners in the current administration’s efforts, Akpabio highlighted their importance as valuable stakeholders in legislative engagements.
He urged sub-national governments not to be distracted by any misunderstanding of the context and true meaning of his statement.
Moreover, the Senate President reaffirmed his commitment to team building and encouraged governors to stay focused on their efforts to ameliorate the adverse effects of the challenging socio-economic environment.
Akpabio extended an invitation for more collaborative efforts to complement the renewed hope agenda.
This unexpected apology comes amid ongoing discussions on the nation’s economic challenges, emphasizing the importance of accurate information dissemination and fostering cooperation between federal and state entities for effective governance.
