In a disruptive turn of events, MTN subscribers are currently grappling with a widespread network outage, rendering them unable to make calls or access the internet through the telecommunication service.
The outage, attributed to a network challenge, has affected both voice and data services.
MTN, addressing the issue on Wednesday night, identified the root cause as a “major service outage caused by multiple fibre cuts.”
The telecommunication giant assured subscribers that its dedicated engineers are diligently working to rectify the situation, with services gradually being restored in certain areas.
Expressing regret over the inconvenience caused, MTN issued a statement, stating, “We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience and understanding as the team works to restore full service as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, this network disruption comes against the backdrop of the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) directive to telecom operators.
The NCC has reemphasized its earlier directive for telecom operators to deactivate phone lines not linked to National Identification Numbers (NINs) by February 28, 2024.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the National Communication Commission, reiterated this stance during the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair on Wednesday.
He emphasized, “To this end, the National Communication Commission has directed all telecommunication operators to bar phone lines of subscribers whose lines are not linked to their NINs on or before February 28, 2024.”
