The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has instituted a ban on all government-funded foreign travels by agencies and officials under the ministry’s purview.
Keyamo made this pronouncement in a significant move aimed at aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s directives who has banned Ministers from foreign trips.
The directive, communicated through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, on Thursday.
The step marks a pivotal shift in official travel protocols within the aviation sector.
Keyamo underscored the necessity of adhering to President Tinubu’s mandate, which seeks to curtail public-funded overseas trips by ministers and government functionaries.
Consequently, all agencies and personnel operating within the ministry have been instructed to halt any planned authorized foreign travels, effective March 21, 2024.
The directive explicitly states, “I am directed to inform you to suspend all foreign trips approved by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development for all Officers in the Ministry and Agencies under Aviation with effect from 21st March 2024.
This is in furtherance of a Presidential directive to suspend public-funded trips by government officials at all levels.”
Furthermore, the statement emphasizes the imperative for any officer intending to embark on a public-funded international trip to obtain prior approval from the Presidency, at least two weeks before the scheduled departure, emphasizing the necessity of such journeys.
“All previously given approvals by the Honourable Minister are hereby put on hold from today 21st March 2024. Please, direct all your DFAs not to process any flight tickets and estacodes for now. Please, this is for strict compliance,” the statement iterated.
The move signals a concerted effort to streamline government expenditure and ensure prudence in resource allocation, echoing the broader agenda of fiscal responsibility and accountability in governance.
