The Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, has taken decisive action in response to mounting tensions by appointing a seven-member panel, led by retired Justice S.O. Omonua, to delve into the allegations levied against Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu.
Shaibu’s involvement in the ongoing power struggle within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrust him into the spotlight, particularly regarding the gubernatorial ticket alongside Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) initiated impeachment proceedings against Shaibu on charges of perjury and violation of secrecy oath, prompting the recent petition signed by 21 out of 24 House members.
Following a resolution passed by the state lawmakers, Justice Okungbowa, in a press statement issued by Chief Registrar B.O. Osawaru, announced the formation of the investigative committee, with retired Justice S.A. Omonua appointed as its chairman.
The panel also comprises distinguished individuals including Prof. Violet Aigbokhevbo, Prof. Boniface Onomion Edegbai, Prof. Theresa Akpoghome, Mr. Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, Dr. Andrew Oliha, and Mr. Idris Abdukareen, as members.
In adherence to constitutional provisions, Justice Okungbowa emphasized the panel’s duty to thoroughly probe the allegations against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, as stipulated in Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
