Mallam Yathabalwe, the notorious Boko Haram commander responsible for orchestrating heinous attacks and the slaughter of farmers in Borno State, has surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai.
The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, disclosed this significant development, expressing relief for the beleaguered communities under Yathabalwe’s reign of terror.
Before his surrender, Yathabalwe’s ruthless exploits had plunged Gwoza and neighboring Mandara Mountain communities into a state of perpetual fear and anguish.
His notoriety stemmed from a series of brutal attacks, particularly targeting farmers, which left a trail of devastation and despair in their wake.
According to the Emir’s account, Yathabalwe voluntarily emerged from his hideout on Friday morning, relinquishing two AK47 rifles and ammunition to the awaiting troops.
This surrender, though unconfirmed by military authorities at the time of reporting, holds the promise of a significant breakthrough in the relentless battle against insurgency in the region.
The Emir, in his address to journalists, expressed cautious optimism about the prospects of peace returning to Gwoza and its environs following Yathabalwe’s surrender.
He emphasized the immense suffering endured by the local populace under the tyrannical rule of the notorious commander, underscoring the newfound hope that accompanies his capitulation.
Efforts to corroborate the Emir’s announcement with military high command officials in Maiduguri or Operation Hadin Kai yielded no immediate response.
However, if confirmed, Yathabalwe’s surrender would represent a major victory in the ongoing struggle to combat terrorism and restore stability to the conflict-ridden region.
